THE SUN AND YOU
As the spring weather warms, we naturally turn our faces to the
sun to enjoy the warm rays. But all the sun worship may lead to
premature aging and even skin cancer. Before you lay in the sun,
get …
THE FACTS
90% of skin damage results from exposure to the sun's ultraviolet
rays.
50% of skin damage occurs before the age of 18.
Sun damage can lead to premature aging, such as rough, saggy, and
discolored skin.
Even normal, everyday sun exposure can cause lines and wrinkles.
More than 90% of skin cancers occur on parts of the body exposed
to the sun.
HOW DOES THE DAMAGE OCCUR?
The sun's ultraviolet radiation…
Stimulates skin cells to produce enzymes that destroy collagen,
which gives skin its strength and flexibility. The depletion of
collage makes skin thinner and less elastic, which promotes sagging
and wrinkles.
Damages skin cells that, in turn, increase melanin production. High
levels of melanin, a dark pigment that give skin its natural color,
promote development of freckles and sun spots.
Slows the growth of new skin cells and the shedding of older ones
causing skin to appear courser, flakier, and more sallow, resulting
in prematurely aged skin.
CAN THE DAMAGE BE PREVENTED?
There are several steps you can take to protect your skin and keep
it young and healthy for as long as possible.
Limit sun exposure to less than three hours per day.
Avoid the sun altogether when ultraviolet radiation is strongest
between 10 AM and 4 PM
Make waterproof sunscreen (SPF 15+) par of your everyday skin care
routine-don't forget to protect your hands, neck and arms as well
as your face.
When you plan to be outdoors for awhile, use a broad-spectrum, waterproof
sunscreen of SPF 30+. Apply it at least 20 minutes before going
out and reapply it every two hours.
Keep covered. Wear wide-brimmed hats (at least 4 inches) and sunglasses
with UV lenses.
If you are smart, you can enjoy the summer sun without damaging
your skin. Surfs up!
